Websters' Pages

Do check out the latest Webster's Pages papers available at Lasting Impression. Aside from "Hello Beautiful" (pictured here), the other lines "A Sweet Life" and "Magical Wishes" are also available. I'm really, really so happy it finally came. Please swoon with me....

It's just fitting that I make a layout of my mom using Websters' Pages. I chose an undated black & white picture of her which is prominently displayed in her room. I just scanned a copy for my layout. My mom estimates that this was taken during her pre-teen years so this is circa 1940's.

To match the vintage-y feel, I sprayed Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist on the base paper as well as the flowers. Here's a closer look....

Back When You Were 3

The school where my 2 boys go declared a 2-week suspension of classes due to the AH1N1 (It's-one-in-one... as pronounced by our Pinoy Boxing Champion). They go back to school on July 6 so there goes the peace & quiet I enjoyed for just 1 short week!! My DD's the only one going to school and she says it's unfair. lol!!!

Youngest DS says that he'll go to the park everyday to play while school's out. As a remembrance, here's a layout I made of DS at the village park when he was just 3 years old. I used the new Sassafras Anthem papers available at Lasting Impression. I just love Sassafras! It's so playful and colorful! More please!!!

It's been quite a while since I've made a mini so I decided to do one to finish off my Sassafras Anthem stash. I've a quite a few (ok, a lot!!) small-sized photos of DS in my photo box. I decided to use random pictures of DS from the age of 2 to 5. To tie it all up, I used the DaisyDs "This Boy Descriptive Words".

Materials used are available at Lasting Impression. Please check out their gallery & online store now! Thanks for looking!!!

Of Weddings & Pearls

It's the month of June and of tadah!!!..... weddings. The family attended a cousin's wonderful wedding last May in Calaruega in Batangas. Well, she was 2 days short of being a June bride but I guess that counts. I made a special layout to mark that special day. Oh not of the bride but of my mom and my aunts. The story later. First, a short tutorial.

Do you have this in your stash?

I got a the metallic set ages ago at Lasting Impression and like a few things in my stash, I totally forgot about it and let it just sit in the drawer for the longest time. Last week, I was in the mood to do some embossing and decided to resurrect my Perfect Pearls.

Before you start, be sure to read the instructions carefully in the packaging and you'll be amazed with the results. I decided to try out a vintage-y layout with some shimmer using the new 7Gypsies Gypsy Market line from Lasting Impression & this is how I did it:

1) Mix gold embossing powder (TopBoss) with a smattering of the Perfect Pearls. It said that "a little goes a long way" so let's see... You may also use clear embossing powder.

2) Stamp the title using Versamark Watermark Stamp Pad.

3) Dust the stamped image with the powder mix.

I also tried it out on the flowers....

....and the photo corner...

4) Using a heat gun, apply a little heat on the stamped images and embellishments. You can sprinkle a little more powder for a added more bling.

And here's my layout which I call "Golden Girls". I decided to make the title a bit subtle. It's barely peeking through the frame pp. It's a picture of my Mother with my 2 aunts and cousin at the wedding. They're really very close and have gone through a lot together: widowhood, empty nest syndrome, not to mention the menopausal years. Lol!!
Here's another layout which used Pefect Pearls on the flowers. It's a picture of my Mom taken on October 16, 1956 when she was about to turn 18! (God bless her for remembering to write the date at the back of the photo) She's the 3rd one from the right. I never thought my Mom could dance.... Gee, don't they all look pretty here. There's really something about old photos that I really love! It's magical to me! A closer look....
Thanks for indulging me!

Materials used in the layouts are all available at Lasting Impression. Please check out their online store!

Time to Hit the Books

My kids were supposed to start school this week but since there's a growing apprehension regarding the spread of the A-H1N1 flu, I have another week to enjoy their company. Oh so NOT!!!! lol! I want them back in school so that I'd finally have peace and quiet in the house! Arrrggghhhh!!!!

My youngest DS was the only one who got disappointed in hearing that classes were moved back another week. He's really excited to find out who his classmates in PREP will be. Aside from that, he's excited to use his new roller bag in school. Here is my youngest in a layout I made a while back. He's trying out his hand at reading and writing. Oh, I can't wait for school to start. Might have more time to scrap!!!

And Something for Father's Day

Everyday, I thank the Lord for all the blessings He has given me and my family. I thank him for my husband and my children. I also never fail to thank my kids' guardian angels who watch over them 24/7. Everything's so good and so right! I do love my family! And to the best father my children could ever have, Happy Father's Day!!! (SEI, 7gypsies & Pink Paislee papers; Rouge de Garance rub-ons all available at Lasting Impression)

More Layouts

Here are some layouts that I haven't posted. I decided to use "old" paper from my stash. Really feels good to see the pile go a bit lower. Hmmm.... about 10 more feet to go. lol!!!!

Funny coincidence though, just this morning I saw a sketch challenge over at Scrappinkids with an uncanny resemblance to my layout. Hmmmm.....can I join?

And here is my DS (again!) at the dentist. He just loves visiting Dr. Angie! How I wish he'll have a better set of pearly whites

Lesson Learned

My family and I just came back from from a fantastic weekend! We attended the beautiful and very intimate wedding of my cousin at Calaruega then proceeded to Hacienda Isabella for the fantastic reception. Both places were absolutely beautiful! The scenery around Calaruega and the chapel itself was so beautiful, I wanted to cry! And as we walked around Hacienda Isabella, I kept wishing and praying that we'd win the lotto so that we'd have our own dream place away from the city as well.

So where are the pictures, you ask? Well, I checked my camera paraphernalia the night before because I knew I'd take tons of beautiful pictures. Things to check: camera, camera battery, flash, flash battery, remote... all CHECK! When we got to the chapel I was all excited and got everything ready. My cousin was just starting to march into the chapel.... Ready, set, turn on my camera.... Whoa!

NO CF CARD!

And why do I bother writing about this? Well, I guess I'm a glutton for punishment. And I do believe there's a lesson to be learned here somewhere. lol!!!!

postscript: Our family stayed overnight at a beautiful bed & breakfast place in Tagaytay City. We then visited Moon Garden (sigh!!) for luch. Will write about this next time, after I steal some photos from my brother, Arthur, who brough along his Nikon.

Last Summer Layouts

Oooohhh, methinks I opened a Pandora's box because of my last post. Please let me correct any notion that I am referring to a particular person/s. If you feel alluded to, I'm very, very sorry but I actually just wrote about who else, but.... ME! lol! My previous post is a REAL story! I bought a Cutterpede when I was perfectly happy with the scissors I got from National Bookstore. I was also using a CARL paper trimmer which by the way does an excellent job but I still bought the MM Precision cutter. They did cost an arm & a leg but I've been very happy with them and never regretted making those decisions.

However, after several years of scrapping, I have to admit that I've also made a few uhm, shall we say, wrong "investments". Todate, I think my worst purchase was the Basic Grey Notch & Die Cutting Tool. I think I just used it twice and haven't touched it since! I'm also ashamed to admit that I bought a few Sizzix dies that I don't even touch now. Anybody out there want to share their booboo buys? Please let me know. I'd feel much better knowing that I'm not alone. lol!!!

Speaking of going back to basics, may I just share a very simple layout using Fiskars Textures Plates. It might seem jurassic to some but I thoroughly enjoyed using my stylus and dry embossing the design on the paper. Anyone have these babies buried deep in their scrap drawer? Why don't you take them out and play with them? Made a total lot of difference for me! Oh, I used GCD Studios for this layout. Please check them out at Lasting Impressions.

Here's a closer look. I just glued the string in a wavy pattern, cut out triangle for the ribbon and voila!

If sometimes you find the cost of having pictures developed a bit steep, why not try editing a series of photos and converging them in 4r or 3r sizes. As an example, the series of photos here of my DS putting on this shirt was captured in just two 4r pictures. Think of the big savings you can make by using your photo editing programs!
The above layout used Pink Paislee and Sassafras papers. Please check them out at Lasting Impressions.

Back to Basics

Show me a scrapper and I'll show you a person who's really into gadgets. And maybe trends? When a newbie scrapper dives into the craft of scrapbooking she'll need the essential tools: scissors, adhesives, cutter & ruler, most probably purchased from the neighborhood bookstore. She hurries home in gleeful ecstacy with the precious stash and gets right down to serious business. After delving deep into the creative process as evidenced (hopefully) by a handful of layouts, the newbie then decides that her tools need to be upgraded. And pronto! The perfectly good pair of scissors will be exchanged for one with a pointed tip, non-stick blades, spring action and comfort grip for ergonomic comfort. How else can she precision cut through the intricate design on the patterned paper? Never mind if it costs an arm & a leg. Besides, at the last crop she went to at the LSS everyone was using it!

And don't let me get started on the cutter. When I started scrapping in 2005, everyone brought along the single-bladed portable paper trimmer to crops. Then it quickly evolved: self-sharpening blades, multi-shaped blades, magnetic surfaces, foldable, etc. Now there are guillotine cutters which guaranty to effortlessly cut through wads of paper, including your fingernails & fingers if you're not careful....OUCH! The downside? It's humongous, weighs a ton and takes up all the surface space of your cropping area. Oh well, you'll argue with anyone who dares that it's STILL a good buy and hence takes up a special corner in your already crowded scrapping nook.

Scrappers can't get enough. They continue about their merry way creating art with their new-found tool. Until a new product comes along. They'll curiously look at it, investigate, then maybe try it out. Whoa! This is fantastic!!! I just have to have it!!! Then they'll fret, whine, obsess and justify the latest acquisition. Happiness is getting the new IT product! Well, for some....

In a perfect world (and a recession-free economy) it would be great to be able to continually upgrade one's gadgets and stash as new (and better) ones come along. Besides, it's all for the scrappers' good, right? Some may agree and quite a handful will argue with this. Who needs a new cutter when the old one works perfectly well? And what's the difference between your high-tech scissors from the ones your Mom used for all her crafts? Engaging in a discussion will be endless and arguing about it is pointless. To each his own, I always say.

Scrapbooking is a billion dollar industry and the last few years has seen its rise to stellar heights. Manufacturers and their design teams were falling over each other to offer the latest and the "best". And we, scrappers were only to willing to embrace these trends. But right now everyone feels the pinch and the scrapbooking industry is not exempt. When income is tight, the first to go are leisure & craft activities. And if consumption falls production quickly follows suit. At present, the industry is facing a major shakedown. Some major players have already closed shop or simply merged with other companies for survival. Rationalization is the name of the game. Just recently, one of my favorite magazines, Simple Scrapbooks, closed shop. Making Memories will follow suit by the end of the year. Wonder who's next?

So where to now, scrapper? Are we finally free from the manufacturers' "trends" and go down to the essence of scrapbooking? Don't despair because as long as there are memories, there'll be something to scrap about. One doesn't always need to have the newest product to be able to complete a beautiful layout. To each his own, again I say. And we can always go back to where we started: some talent, a lot of chutzpah and a good pair of scissors from the neighborhood bookstore.

My Daughter Will be Home Tomorrow!!!!

...after an 8-week study tour in Xiamen, China. I really, really miss my baby girl! If you ask me, maybe I deserve a whack in the head for allowing my baby to go but I know that this experience was good for her. She'll be planing in tomorrow at the NAIA 2 terminal. Can't wait. Maybe mine will be the biggest welcome banner. LOL!!!

In honor of my DD, here's a layout I made using American Crafts paper from Lasting Impression.

Meanwhile, it's been too hot to stay in the kitchen so I've been keeping myself busy making some layouts. The next one is about the despedida we gave for my daughter the day before she left for China. Hmmmm... time really flies fast.

I used Little Yellow Bicycle's "Love Letters", the latest available from Lasting Impression for the last 2 layouts in this post. It's a beautiful line of papers perfect for vintage layouts. Here, I have a picture of my parents dancing at a Xmas party way back in 1961. The original photo was small and a little faded. I scanned and edited the photo to recapture its dreamy quality.

I do love old pictures! There's something beautifully magical about it! But what's actually wonderful about old pictures is the story behind it. I had to ask my Mom who's in the States about this picture. She said that she was just newly married then. And how did she remember? She said the dress she was wearing was part of her wedding trosseau! And you know that black patch on my Dad's shirt? Well.... here's the story and it's kinda romantic.

Journaling:

My parents got married on July 4, 1961. Gregorio was 28. Rufina 23. It was sort of a hasty marriage but not for the wrong reasons. You see, my paternal grandmother, Josefa Reyes, died unexpectedly and well-meaning relatives advised my parents to beat the 40-day mourning period and get married. It was that or wait another 2-3 years in accordance with traditional Chinese beliefs. So here are my parents enjoying one of their first dances as a newly-married couple. Just one of the many dances they'll enjoy in the years to come.

Slowly but Surely

...am rebuilding my blog. I was so shocked by the disaster I caused (pls see previous post) that I refused to sit in front of the computer! Well, actually I was also away in Baguio for 4 days which was a perfectly good excuse for me to stay away from the computer. The mountain air did all of us good because as soon as I got home, I was raring to scrap! Hmmm.... now I really know the reason for my low scrap output. I spend too much time on my butt blogging & blog-hopping when I should be scrapping and maybe baking.

Baguio was wet, wet, wet but the weather was still fantastic! We were able to go out in the mornings but come lunch hour the grey clouds suddenly descend upon the whole city and everything gets freezing wet. Still, it was a gorgeous vacation! Here's a picture of the kids trying out the strawberry flavored taho. Yum!!!! Try it when you go to Baguio!

The month of April bowed out with almost daily rains and a wet May seems to be upon us. Hmmm.. is summer is really over? Before the rains unusually stay on, here are a few happy, summer layouts that I made for Lasting Impression.

And my choice for a carefree summer layouts? Sassafras! I love the cute and carefree designs of all its lines! Love using it on my DS!

Still using Sassafras papers mixed with Cosmo Cricket, I then made this layout of my DS to commemorate the time he spent a few days in the hospital last year. DS almost freaked out when he saw pink colors on the layout! lol! The Sassafras lines are quite versatile too! I so love the mood that I captured in this layout of my 3 boys (DH & two DS) walking up the trail to Mount Mayi in South Korea.
I was on a roll so I decided to scrap DS' picture at the Everland Theme Park & Resort in Korea. (thanks also to the scrapping session we had last May 1 at Lasting Impression) DS & I were left behind while all our companions went to ride the giant wooden roller coaster with the really crazy loop-the-loop. Even though it was a long wait DS still had loads of fun! I used Cosmo Cricket, Prima & Rusty Pickle papers for this LO. I also had fun using (again! after a long, long time) my MM paints and UTEE on the chipboard.

Please check out the gallery and online shop of Lasting Impression for materials used here.

Korean Tidbits

Had a great vacation in South Korea! Such a beautiful & clean place! Any visitor would be greatly impressed by the humongous new airport in Incheon. I just wish I can say as much for our NAIA (weep!).

Like any 1st world country, South Korea is grappling with a low, near-zero population rate. Due to the high cost of living, couples opt to postpone or totally rule out having children. The government gives an incentive to couples for up to 3 years but then it's still very expensive to have kids. Just sending them to school sets them back by millions (and the tour guide was talking in US dollars)! It's no wonder Koreans send their kids to the Philippines to study. Our tour guide says that it's so cheap here!

I totally loved Korean food! The typical Korean meal has a medley of appetizers, usually vegetable, served in tiny dishes. The hands down favorite was of course, kimchi while a close second was the dried seaweed that almost always disappears as soon as the meal starts. The viands are not really that spicy. Compared to Thai food which I would rate with 5 chilis, Korean food is about 2.5 chilis only.

This is one of our favorite meals: duck barbeque. We wrapped the duck slices in a variety of greens then dipped it in yummy soy bean paste.

The time we visited coincided with the blooming of the cherry blossom trees. They are so beautiful!!! The blooming marks the arrival of spring. Koreans are mighty proud of their cherry blossom trees.

One thing I also noticed: Koreans have lovely skin! Maybe it's the weather? Or their diet? Or maybe Face Shop? lol! You'd see flowers furiously abloom everywhere.
A quaint custom that we followed: taking off shoes when entering an establishment and sitting on the floor for meals.
Annyong haseo!!!!

See You All Soon!

Ever since we've been married, DH and I make it a point to just stay home during Holy Week. We've all heard horror stories about vacations taken during this time of the year. Crowded airports and kilometric traffic are just a few. Rather than sweat it out vacationing with the rest of Metro Manila we just stay put in Metro Manila.

Manila IS just the place to be! There's near zero traffic while everything else is just wonderfully peaceful and quiet. We'd usually hie off for an overnight stay at the beach then be back the next day but that's just about the longest we'd be out.

For us, nothing beats the comforts of home! Our activities include but are not limited to DVD marathons, all-chips buffet (with DH as instigator and me as hapless onlooker) or just plain chilling.

This year is different though. Tomorrow, our family will fly off to the Land of Kimchi. Hmmm.... a welcome change, I must admit. Just hope it won't be a stressful trip. See you all soon! I promise to take pictures!

Have a meaningful Holy Week! Happy vacation to all!

Pink Cupcakes and Another Beach Layout

PW made cupcakes so I tried to make some too, icing and all. I used PW's chocolate sheet cake recipe and the cupcakes turned out really nice. This recipe was soooo easy to follow and absolutely delicious. You don't need a mixer to make this one. Try it! This is my first time to do a buttercream icing which I found so yummy. DH though found it a tad too sweet. Pardon the icing but I'm a novice here. It's the best I can do so far. Just have to keep practicing.
Good thing Cocoapantry is just outside our village. That's where I got the icing tip I used for decorating the cupcakes. It's a nice, cozy little store that sells baking stuff. They sell boxes of all sizes & shapes, cupcake liners, baking ingredients such as chocolate, sprinkles and just about anything that concerns baking. They even have vanilla bean pods! The good thing is that you don't have to buy by the dozen. I had planned to send a few cupcakes to my DD's friend as a birthday gift so I also got a box from them. Hmmmm.... I guess I' won't be buying cupcakes anymore soon since I can make them.... If (!) I have the time though! lol!
And here's another beach layout I made of my DS. I used yummy Collage Press papers from Lasting Impression. Sigh! DS is not a baby anymore....
Happy summer to all of you! Where are you off too this summer?

Please check out the gallery of Lasting Impression for materials used for this layout. Check it out for inspiration from April Lim, Pia Lopez & Ria Mojica.

Warning: Hot Days Ahead!

That's according to PAG-ASA. And they say that this summer's going to one of the hottest and longest on record. Time to hit the beach to cool off and take our much needed R&R.

I remember our summers way back then. Every year, our family would never fail to visit the hot spring resorts in Calamba, Laguna. We'd start our trip on the old National Highway early in the morning then end up at around 10 a.m. in one of the resorts that dotted the place. Without being told twice, all the kids would immediately jump into the inviting pool and swim until it's time for lunch. The meal consisted mainly of the obligatory adobo with plain rice, fruits (usually ripe juicy mango or watermelon) and Coke. After that, the kids would jump right back into the pool while the adults lazed around the table to chat or catnap. The day usually ended at 4 pm. We'd pack everything up, dress up (with much protest from the kids) and hit the road back home.

To usher in this hot summer season, here's a layout I did of my DD dancing her heart out on the beach last year. I do love this series of photos I took of her. I used WeRMemoryMakers papers for this layout.

Oh, and I was able to make some thank you cards for my DS's nursery teacher. We'll give it to her on report card day at the end of the month. I can't wait.....My 2 boys are already on vacation, while DD will have hers on the 18th. Welcome to summer!!!

Please check out the gallery of Lasting Impression for the materials used in the "Dance" layout.

Cooking Up a Storm

You may have noticed that I've been really into cooking & baking lately. My constant visits to gorgeous food blogs on the net has awakened the long-dormant Martha Stewart/Ina Garten in me. And getting recipes and knowing that they look good & actually taste good makes it so much easier.

Just recently, I've edited my blog to include updates on some food blogs that I actually follow: smittenkitchen, pioneerwoman (I heart!), our very own pinoycook.net and simplyrecipes (have to add some more). Locally, I am inspired by blogs of scrappers (or relations) who also indulge in their culinary passion among them Tnapay, Sheryl Martinez (hubby's a fantastic chef/foodie), Lee Imao's food critique blog, among others.

And I got even more excited when I got this baby just this January 2009.

No, it's not a 5-digit Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer though it certainly looks like one. It's a Protech Meat Processor (well, don't ask me.....that's what it said on their mailer!) which I bought from Makro Cubao. The demo unit displayed right at the entrance immediately beckoned to me as I walked in to do my regular shopping.

"Buy me! Buy me! Haven't you been wanting to have me or something like me ever since?" "

"Bet you're expensive!"

"I'm only P3,999!"

I looked at the price and said to myself, "Hhmmmm.... P3,999 for a Kitchen Aid is not bad at all." (I didn't know yet what it actually was )

"Whoa!" That's when I did a double-take! How can a KA be so cheap!

Flashback: I HAVE been wishing to have one of these ever since. Years ago, I remember it selling for about P15k at Price Smart (now S&R). Well yes it was cheaper than the going price then at Rustan's but still much too steep for me. Besides, DH said that it was a refurbished unit, whatever that meant. Anyway, I still had my trusty hand mixer (but makes me pasmado after baking...lol!)

Mind you it wasn't an easy decision for me. What if it breaks down after a few days? What if it just looks like a KA but doesn't perform like one? Oh, but it's just too good a deal to let go so I interviewed the merchandiser and asked for a demo of a unit. He took out the bowl , the paddle, the dough hook, the wire whip... oh dear, they look exactly like a KA! A bonus is the meat grinder attachment with 2 blades. Am I dreaming?

Ok, after 10 minutes it was riding on my cart and I was walked around with a silly grin on my face as I hurried to finish my shopping.

So today I baked Crispy Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies by Smitten Kitchen and Ina Garten's Chocolate which I saw from Tnapay's blog.

The cookies turned out into giants because I was in hurry to put the dough on the pan. I used an ice cream scooper which makes it so much easier. Verdict: It is (!) crispy outside & chewy inside. Just make sure to add more chocolate chips if making giant ones. Definitely a keeper. Meanwhile, Ina Garten 's chocolate recipe is also a keeper. It's easy to follow and delicious. Just not so hot about the chocolate frosting. Maybe I'll use my old one.
Of course, DS was kind enough to "clean" the bowl & spatula for me.And for dinner, we had Pasta Puttanesca
and Chicken Pot Pie. Try this recipe I got from Smitten Kitchen! It is absolutely easy to make and really, really yummy!
I usually psych and prepare myself a few days before by looking for recipes and checking if I have the ingredients at hand. I just make one final trip to the grocery before the chosen cooking day. Hmmmm... I 'm really enjoying myself. And my family, too! Uh-oh, just a bit scared about the waist-line.

Oh well, I'm hanging up my apron for now . Now off to see what I can whip up next....
